weekly readings for reflection

Sentence for the Week

Thus says the Lord, 'Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.'
Isaiah 56:1

Collect for Reflection

God of compassion, you love every person without exception.
Turn our hearts so that we may love our neighbour. Remove from us everything we use to exclude our sisters and brothers.
Guard the door of our lips so that what we say may be worthy of our calling as your people.
Through Jesus Christ our liberator, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
AMEN.

 Now also read these related verses:
Genesis 45:1-15
Psalm 133
Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32
Matthew 15:21-28
Household Prayer :  Morning
Lord, You inclined your ear and heard my cry, and lifted me when I was low. Strengthen me for service as I carry your light to the world.
AMEN.
Household Prayer : Evening
God of the night watches, guard me from torment, release me from distress. Call me close to you and kiss me with your favour that I may rest secure in you.
AMEN.

Praying this week for....

  • everyone in the parish of St Johns - for protection, strength and wisdom to follow God's will;
  • our Bishop Steven and his wife Lorraine, our Vicar-General Jan Clark,  and our Archdeacon Keith Gover. We lift to you the parishioners of Oamaru and their vicars;
  • pray for the NZ Anglican Missions Board, the clergy of the Diocese of Polynesia  and for all throughout Polynesia who are called to share the gospel and deepen the discipleship in the Pacific, and especially the work of the House of Sarah in Fiji helping women and children of domestic violence and discrimination in their society ;
  • we pray for the parish of Holy Trinity Gore and their vicar Rev Gary Griffith-Smith who has surgery this week - we pray for his healing, the skill of the medical staff and the care of his family;
  • that we be always willing to share whatever we have with those less fortunate than ourselves in our community.

        Reflection question:
Why do you think Jesus resisted the Canaanite woman's request?
How does this fit with your idea of Jesus' mercy and love?
What changed his mind? How does this influence your faith in God?
